Starting a Slaughterhouse
Running a meat processing business is not as simple or straightforward as it may seem from the outside. Either you or someone on your team must have deep knowledge of how the meat processing industry works. Here we connect you with the best information we have found on feasibility, regulations, plant design, and financing.
Foundational Info
The Niche Meat Processors’ Assistance Network (NMPAN), a program of Oregon State University that operates nationally, is probably the best clearinghouse for general information on starting and running a red meat slaughter facility. Their short primer, “So You Think You Want to Start a Meat Plant” is an invaluable resource for anyone considering going down this path. If you read that and still want more, visit their Beginners’ Guide, which contains 4 fact sheets, including a new plant checklist and one on small plant economics.
If you’re ready to dive deeper, the webinars below and the links to the left provide more in-depth information.
